Viewtiful Joe was developed by Capcom’s Production Studio 4 for the Nintendo GameCube. It was originally released in 2003 as a part of the Capcom Five. The game’s story concerns Joe, an avid movie-goer whose girlfriend Silvia is kidnapped during a film starring Joe’s favorite superhero, Captain Blue. Joe is shortly thereafter thrust into Movieland, where Silvia is taken by the villainous group known as Jadow. After accepting a special V-Watch from Captain Blue, Joe transforms into the tokusatsu-style persona “Viewtiful Joe” and sets out to rescue her.
Gamers partaked in some of the most over the top action ever experienced in Viewtiful Joe. It was chaotic, challenging and most importantly an incredibly fun game. Players blazed their way through chaos in traditional 2D platform side-scrolling intermixed with 3D cel-shaded graphics. Abilities known as “VFX Powers” grant the player special actions for combat and puzzle-solving, such as slowing down or speeding up time. Viewtiful Joe was critically acclaimed for its unique visual style and gameplay, earning itself a number of awards from various media publications.
A remake on the Wii U would be a brilliant move by Nintendo and Capcom, especially if they could nail it down as an exclusive. It would be another must have title for the new console further increasing sales and raising confidence in the platform for all. The developers could do some really amazing things with this game and its mechanics in conjunction with the new Gamepad. I’m sure they could get highly creative and utilize the touch screen to manipulate time and many other in game effects. We would love to hear your thoughts and if you would be up for revisiting Viewtiful Joe especially on the Wii U platform.
