Video Game Reviews: Video, Article or Podcast Format?

Alright gamers, here is your chance to chime in with your thoughts on video game review formats. I’m sure opinions will vary and that is what peaks my interest regarding this. I would love some feedback on your personal preference. I for one enjoy video game review articles simply because they can be extremely detailed yet not contain any spoilers. I can’t tell you how many video reviews I have watched where the review gave away too much of the game’s content. On the other hand, you do get a better overall picture and impression of the game with a high definition video game review but you absolutely risk catching those spoilers each time. It’s a gamble for sure.

Podcasts are huge right now and they can give you a decent idea on the gameplay, graphic quality and overall presentation of a video game. Being that it’s in a audio format, it’s therefore portable and very convenient. However, so are smart phones, laptops and tablets where you can utilize any of these video game review methods. The one downside to a podcast review is you won’t visually see the game’s graphics first hand. While a great speaker can paint a pretty picture, I still like to see it for myself personally.

Post your thoughts below or contact us via email with your preference. We’ll let you know which video game review format received the majority vote next month!

About Dan Adcock

Avid gamer who enjoys the older nostalgic titles as much as the newest AAA releases. Remakes from the classic 8 and 16 bit era are some my absolute favorite titles. I also enjoy experiencing new IP's on each and every platform, especially when the creators give the game an artistic look and unique presentation never seen before. I've been lucky enough to start out gaming on the NES. Since this rebirth of the industry, I have witnessed the evolution of gaming, both in its incredible growth in overall popularity and as an entertainment medium juggernaut. We are quickly approaching the next generation of gaming and I couldn't be more excited for the almost limitless possibilities that await.

In order, articles, videos, then podcasts for me. I’m like you where I don’t want to see too much of the game and see any spoilers in a video review. A written review with some screenshots and whether it’s a hit or miss is all I’m looking for.

I don’t understand why nobody has thought of this before… but my idea:

Have a nicely written article with a very short corresponding video at the bottom, just quickly highlighting what’s good or bad about the game. Like… you can’t describe what it’s like to survive a building collapsing around you in BF3 as well as you could show 20 seconds of heart-stopping awesome.
