BootHammer Video Game Reviews goes retro with a classic review on Crash Bandicoot which was the originally released for the playstation in 1996. It is also the first in the Crash Bandicoot series. In 2006 it was re-released to the playstation network and is downloadable to the playstation 3 and playstation portable.
Crash is considered a platform game (any video game that requires the player to jump to and
from suspended platforms or over obstacles), and he must travel through 3 islands and defeat Doctor
Neo Cortex, so he can save his girlfriend Tawna. Crash has an unusual characteristic, he can spin like a
tornado and knock his enemies off the screen. Any enemy that is attacked with the tornado spin can be
catapulted into another on-screen enemy knocking both out at the same time. Scattered throughout
each level are wooden boxes or crates filled with wumpa fruit which looks like apples or peaches, and if
you collect 100 wumpa fruit you gain an extra life. Sound familiar? There are several other boxes along
the way through the levels including, explosive T.N.T crates, checkpoint crates, and crates with a Witch
Doctor’s mask which protects Crash from one enemy attack. There’s also special crates containing a
coin with Twana’s face on it, and if you collect 3 in one level it sends you to a bonus level that allows you
to get extra “peaches” and extra lives that you will definitely need throughout the game. As Crash
travels in search of his girlfriend, there’s several Bosses along the way including: Papu Papu- the chief of
the native village, Ripper Roo- a kangaroo with razor sharp toenails, Koala Kong- a dumb muscular Koala,
and Pinstripe Potroo- the bodyguard for Doctor Cortex. The bosses are definitely challenging, but
nothing an avid gamer can’t handle.
If you think you’re going to sit down and beat this game with no problem, think again because
it is a difficult game as a whole. You will need all the extra lives you can accumulate so you can get
passed several of the levels. This game certainly takes a little strategy especially with animals trying to
kill you, darts shooting from walls, moving walls, and floors that fall out from under you. I mean it never
ends, this game keeps you on your toes, and possibly a few curse words may fly from your mouth, but
all this is expected when you’re playing a great game. Crash is a classic, and a must for any video game
collection. If you’ve never played Crash Bandicoot, then you should put it at the top of your list.
Well Boothammer wants to know your thoughts on this timeless classic. Have you ever played?
Is it one of your favorites? Leave your comments gamers.
