Toukiden: The Age of Demons Review | Become the Ultimate Demon Fighting Warrior

TECMO KOEI had such tremendous success in Japan that they decided to bring Toukiden: The Age of Demons to the US. It is exclusively for the Sony Vita handheld. It was Developed by Omega Force, creators of no other than the ever popular Dynasty Warrior series. I still remember being blown away by the scope of Dynasty Warriors 2 at the launch of PlayStation 2 and the developers yet again do not disappoint with Toukiden: The Age of Demons.

Following an amazing cutscene, you’ll start the game customizing your warrior known as a slayer. You’ll then be pit against a ferocious beast that towers dozens of feet above you. This is but a mere test within the story mode and it gives players a good chance to try out the combat and controls. You’ll hit the ground running but the game mechanics are solid and simple making each evasive roll and sword slash satisfying and engaging. Shortly after this battle you’ll be introduced to some NPC’s and take a look at the village and world that has nearly fallen to the demon horde.

Players can jump right into the campaign or choose to take part in some side missions. The Boss fights are obviously where the core of the game is and where the majority of fun is to be had. Defeating these bosses will enable players to unlock features such as better armor and deadlier weapons. Mitama is another item that can be acquired through victory which are souls of fallen warriors. These souls give the player special attacks and abilities that are very useful and quite advantageous in battle. The combat is very fluid and thanks to the finely tuned controls, players quickly become skillful with their chosen weapon and attacks. It’s not exactly fast paced but this leads to more intense fights where the enemies and bosses are far smarter and tougher than the typical scenario found when faced against a high enemy count within many hack-and-slash titles. The war for humanity gets tough and while in-game AI support is nice to have, Omega Force developers have included online co-op. Gamers can tackle the main or side missions with up to four players which is really fun. It should also be noted players can game offline with nearby Vita’s when friends visit.

Graphically, Toukiden: The Age of Demons looks crisp, vibrant, colorful and overall very impressive on the Sony Vita. Each stage offers a change of scenery, different terrain and backdrops that make the journey that much more interesting and fun to explore. The character model features of your character, fellow NPC’s and game bosses do a great job in displaying the handheld’s processing power. This type of game could have easily been mundane but luckily TECMO KOEI and the Omega Force crew wanted to create a game players could really sink some time into and still find themselves enjoying it weeks later. That’s one of the hardest parts of developing any game, keeping the gamer engrossed in the world you have created and The Age of Demons does that very well.

Amos Ip, Senior Vice President at TECMO KOEI, summed up this exciting new Vita exclusive very well stating the following: “With a rich story exploring many eras of Japanese history, memorable characters, stunning visuals, complex combat system, and four-player support, Toukiden: The Age of Demons represents the most ambitious title to date from the team at Omega Force.”

Avid gamer who enjoys the older nostalgic titles as much as the newest AAA releases. Remakes from the classic 8 and 16 bit era are some my absolute favorite titles. I also enjoy experiencing new IP's on each and every platform, especially when the creators give the game an artistic look and unique presentation never seen before. I've been lucky enough to start out gaming on the NES. Since this rebirth of the industry, I have witnessed the evolution of gaming, both in its incredible growth in overall popularity and as an entertainment medium juggernaut. With the next generation of gaming upon us, there simply hasn't been a better time to be a gamer and I can't wait to experience all that it has to offer.
