Retro 3 Console Review

Retro 3 Console BootHammer

Gamers have you been dreaming of a console that lets you relive some of your favorite classic games in one? Well the Retro 3 allows you to do so. You can take a trip down memory lane to your childhood with this console.  Allow me to tell you a little about it.

Now we all love classic consoles we had when we were kids, but having all those just takes up too much space.  This little space saving console allows you to play games from the original Nintendo, the Super Nintendo, and the Sega Genesis.

Now you’re probably wondering where in the world can I would buy this?  It is very simple actually.
Ebay and Amazon both offer the Retro 3 for around $69.99 with free shipping.  Your console will
come ready to play which will include of coarse the console, 2 wireless controllers, S-video, and AC adaptors.  Even though the console comes with 2 wireless controllers, you still have the option to use original controllers, but don’t worry about the cords not being long enough because you can purchase cord extensions.

You gamers may already have some games you’ve kept from your youth, but if you are wanting to purchase more or start a new collection, then games will run you anywhere from $2-3 dollars on the low end and up to $70-80 for the more collectible ones.  It really depends on the condition, contents and what game you’re wanting to revisit.

It seems like everything good in life comes with a catch, and this is no different. There are several games that the Retro 3 console is not compatible with, but only with the NES and SNES.  I’ve yet to find a Sega Genesis game that’s not compatible.  I’ll be kind enough to give a list of a few games that aren’t compatible.

NES: After Burner, Athletic World, Bandit Kings of Ancient China, Battletoads,

Captain Planet and the Planeteers, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, Cheetahmen

II, Challenge of the Dragon, Crystal Mines, DuckTales, Dragon Warrior 2, Dirty

Harry: The War against Drugs, Gauntlet, Gemfire, Laser Invasion, Mad Max,

Paperboy, Pipe Mania, Rad Racer II, Short Order Eggsplode!, Stadium Events,

Stack-Up, Street Cop, The Krion Conquest, The Last Starfighter, Uncharted

Waters, and World Class Track Meet.

SNES: BatterUP, Doraemon – Nobita to Yosei no Kuni, Dragon Warrior I, II, and

III, Front Mission: Gun Hazard, Kirby’s Dream Land 3, Kirby Super Star, Super Mario RPG, Super Scope 6,

Street Fighter Alpha 2, Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, Star Ocean, and Winter Gold.

Final Thoughts

Even though the Retro 3 is not compatible with every single game, there’s still a large amount of games you can play.  This is an excellent console to have in your collection. What are your thoughts?  Do you own one or would you purchase it?  Any other games you may know of that isn’t compatible? Leave your comments gamers.

The Retro 3 is great and usually plays each game immediately. No need to wiggle or blow out the cartridges anymore, haha. Just buy some refurbished or aftermarket controllers and you will be set for some old school gaming =) We will have a Castlevania IV review coming soon!

I was a big SNES and Megadrive gamer back in the day. This looks like a great product for the average consumer.
However, I personally used to enjoy playing these old classics on my PC via emulator software and an ‘old school’ shaped USB controller.
However, a lot of the software used for these games have many compatibility issues and often require tweaking so the average gamer may run into problems.
ROMs and emulator software seem to fall into a legal grey area, and you would be wise to avoid.
The fact that you can simply plug and play your favourite games right away, coupled with the fact that you can jack it straight into the TV and play 2 player means it should surely hit the nostalgia spot for some of us who remember the good old days.
I would love to geek out by placing all my old cartidges next to the DVD collection in the living room.

    • Dan Adcock says:

We at BootHammer have certainly “Geeked out” with the retro consoles. I have two in place with the addition of the classic NES. Some games don’t play at all on the retro systems so having the original NES is a worthy investment. I will start making my way through Castlevania III this week for an upcoming review.

You should grab one up and kick back and enjoy some 2D action =) Emulators can do the job but something about having the original equipment and being able to lounge on the couch makes it far more enjoyable IMO. Co-op on some old school titles along with some friends is pretty tough to beat ;)

I just wish it looked prettier :P

    I love it

IT DOSN’T PLAY COMIC ZONE FOR SEGA !!!! So pissed SO sad so depressed

    • Dan Adcock says:

One of the few downfalls of the retro consoles. Certain games don’t emulate well with the hardware. Castlevania 3 for the NES comes to mind for me, I’ve had it for a while and yet to play it. Comic Zone was an interesting game, forgot about that one ;)
