We are quickly approaching the launch of the Wii U and with that brings us familiar faces but with a High Definition face lift. The Wii U launch window promises to bring not one but two amazing next gen platform based titles. Platformers and Nintendo go hand in hand, so let’s take a closer look at these potential system sellers.

Rayman Legends

Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, Rayman Legends is the follow-up to last year’s highly-acclaimed Rayman Origins. Rayman Legends takes full advantage of the Wii U controller to bring players innovative multiplayer interactions that go beyond those found in traditional platform games. Players can use the Wii U controller’s touch screen to take out enemies or clear paths and use the gyroscope technology to manipulate and rotate platforms on the TV screen.

The Wii U controller also allows players to continue the adventure of Rayman and his friends on the controller’s screen even while the television is off. The game carries on the style of gameplay from Rayman Origins in which multiple players run, jump and punch their way through tricky levels. Lums can be collected by touching them, defeating enemies, or freeing captured Teensies. Along with Rayman and Globox returning as playable characters, the Wii U version of the game allows an additional player to control Murfy using the Wii U GamePad’s touch screen. Murfy can perform various actions such as cutting through ropes, activating mechanisms, grabbing hold of enemies and assisting in gathering Lums.

New Super Mario Bros. U

Mario will leap onto Wii U in New Super Mario Bros. U, a new side-scrolling adventure that introduces new transformations for Mario and the ability for players to play as their Mii characters. The game also introduces the new Boost Mode, which can be used to add blocks, to help players avoid enemies, enable Mario to discover secrets or allow multiple players working together to perform a speed run in record time.

As with many Mario games, the main objective of each level is to reach the goal flag at the end while avoiding enemies and hazards. The game features five playable characters: Mario, Luigi, two colored Toads, and Mii characters saved on the console. New Super Mario Bros. U is played either by using the Wii Remote or the Wii U GamePad, which allows the player to view the action occurring on the television screen on the controller’s touch screen. In multiplayer, up to four players play simultaneously using Wii Remotes, but an additional (fifth) player may participate using the Wii U GamePad. The additional player does not control a character, but instead has the ability to assist the other players by manipulating the level: the player can create new item boxes and stun enemies by tapping various areas on the touch screen.

New Super Mario Bros. U introduces new power-ups, such as a Flying Squirrel suit that allows players to glide across long distances or slowly descend down vertical paths. Baby Yoshis, which emerge from item boxes, can be carried by the individual players. The Yoshis appear in different colors, which signify the ability they bestow on the player, such as inflating in midair, blowing bubbles to attack enemies, and illuminating dark areas. The game will also utilize the Miiverse functionality of the Wii U console.

Many including myself were hoping for a new take on Mario and possibly a new Metroid or F-Zero but regardless, these are two amazing platformers that are sure to move systems. Most importantly both will be available at the time of launch. Will you be picking up either? Let us know your thoughts on these two games and any other Wii U launch titles that have you eagerly anticipating the new console.

Avid gamer who enjoys the older nostalgic titles as much as the newest AAA releases. Remakes from the classic 8 and 16 bit era are some my absolute favorite titles. I also enjoy experiencing new IP's on each and every platform, especially when the creators give the game an artistic look and unique presentation never seen before. I've been lucky enough to start out gaming on the NES. Since this rebirth of the industry, I have witnessed the evolution of gaming, both in its incredible growth in overall popularity and as an entertainment medium juggernaut. With the next generation of gaming upon us, there simply hasn't been a better time to be a gamer and I can't wait to experience all that it has to offer.
