2012 has been a fantastic year for gamers. We have seen some of the most impressive releases across all platforms and even saw Nintendo launch their new console the Wii U. While there was an incredible amount of AAA games released for 2012, here are our personal favorites and top pick for game of the year.
1. The Walking Dead: The living will have to survive the relentless hunger of zombies in this game based on The Walking Dead, the widely acclaimed comic book series and television series. Across five dark and emotional episodes of gameplay, every decision and action you take can result in the entire story of the game changing around you. Play as Lee Everett, a convicted criminal, who has been given a second chance at life in a world devastated by the undead. With corpses returning to life and survivors stopping at nothing to maintain their own safety, protecting an orphaned girl named Clementine may offer him redemption in a world gone to hell. Telltale Games has created an amazing collection of episodes that really draw gamers in to this dark gritty world where survival is never guaranteed and every decision and action has consequences giving the game a tremendous replay value. Fans of the genre and show alike should not miss this one.
2. Halo 4: Master Chief returns in Halo 4, part of a new trilogy in the colossal Halo universe. Set almost five years after the events of Halo 3, Halo 4 takes the series in a new direction and sets the stage for an epic new sci-fi saga, in which the Master Chief returns to confront his destiny and face an ancient evil that threatens the fate of the entire universe. Halo 4 also introduces a new multiplayer offering, called Halo Infinity Multiplayer, that builds off of the Halo franchise’s rich multiplayer history. The hub of the Halo 4 multiplayer experience is the UNSC Infinity – the largest starship in the UNSC fleet that serves as the center of your Spartan career. Here you’ll build your custom Spartan-IV supersoldier, and progress your multiplayer career across all Halo 4 competitive and cooperative game modes. 343 has accomplished the impossible and delivered the greatest Halo experience on their first outing with the series. The campaign is absolutely thrilling while the multiplayer scene has been executed to near perfection. This leaves me in high anticipation for the future of the Halo series and what 343 will bring to the table next.
3. New Super Mario Bros. U: The Nintendo Wii U launched with a new, side-scrolling adventure featuring Mario, Luigi, Toad … and your Mii character! Now’s your chance to step inside the Mushroom Kingdom and explore new worlds, new power-ups and new ways to play. Up to five players can jump into the fun, with up to four people using Wii Remote controllers and one on the Wii U GamePad. The experience is different, depending on which controller is used. The Wii U needed a system seller and once again Mario delivers. It’s a modern yet nostalgic masterpiece and with it brings an immensely fun experience whether you’re going through the story mode alone or with four friends. Its unique Gamepad brings new multiplayer capabilities to the table and it also offers up the best portable Mario experience to date (within range). The Challenge mode offers a truly difficult area to master even for the pros. With that said, there is something here for every gamer to enjoy and this title belongs in the library of any and every Wii U owner.
4. Dishonored: Set in Dunwall, you are the once-trusted bodyguard of the beloved Empress. Framed for her murder, you become an infamous assassin, known only by the disturbing mask that has become your calling card. In a time of uncertainty, when the city is besieged by plague and ruled by a corrupt government armed with industrial technologies, dark forces conspire to bestow upon you abilities beyond those of any common man – but at what cost? The truth behind your betrayal is as murky as the waters surrounding the city, and the life you once had is gone forever. Dishonored’s story is engrossing, its characters are captivating and the marvelous sandbox based world simply delivers an amazingly rich experience. This game has generated a lot of hype during its development process and someway, somehow Arkane Studios has managed to not only meet incredibly high expectations but over deliver.
After much consideration, we have chosen the Walking Dead as BootHammer’s Game of the Year. Its engaging story, unique gaming elements and the sheer amount of content within all 5 episodes make it our personal favorite of 2012. We would love to hear your favorite games of 2012 as well.
