Resident Evil 6: Capcom’s Greatest Effort Yet?

Resident Evil 6 is scheduled for release on October 2 and Capcom looks to be going all out with their latest entry in this extremely popular survival horror series. While RE5 and Operation Raccoon City met some heavy criticism, one has to question what to expect with RE6. Gameplay appears to be on the darker side and be more in line with Resident Evil 4. That’s not to say there aren’t action sequences but the game does seem to be shooting for the grittier side which is exciting for fans of the older entries.

This time around players will be able to select between three scenarios with connected story-lines. The player characters from each scenario will have their own partners in a similar fashion to previous games. The game will have two primary enemies including the returning zombies and the newly introduced J’avo. Unlike zombies, J’avo are able to interact between each other to plan a certain attack, use weapons and heal themselves. Co-op will also make a return for those that enjoy teaming up.

What should gamers expect story wise? The plot is actually very intriguing for RE6. The truth behind the 1998 Raccoon City Destruction Incident has been fully disclosed. This was done in hopes it it would curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity. Leon makes a return and is forced to face the fact that the President of the United States has been infected with the virus. Now he must make the hardest decision in his life. Expect to also see Chris Redfield and a new addition in Jake Mueller, who Capcom has confirmed is the son of deceased Albert Wesker. Jake Muller flees from the authorities during a bioterrorist attack and partners up with Sherry Birkin. At the same time, Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance member Chris Redfield arrives in the fictional Chinese city of Lanshiang, which is under threat of a bioterrorist attack. With no country safe from these horrible outbreaks, the entire world’s population is united by a common fear: there may be no hope left.

Resident Evil 6 is shaping up to possibly be one of the best games of 2012. With a development staff of more than 600, it’s Capcom’s biggest production to date.  However, we won’t find out it’s true potential and direction till E3. Until then, let’s hope this will be the Resident Evil many fans have been waiting for since the brilliant masterpiece that was RE4.

Avid gamer who enjoys the older nostalgic titles as much as the newest AAA releases. Remakes from the classic 8 and 16 bit era are some my absolute favorite titles. I also enjoy experiencing new IP's on each and every platform, especially when the creators give the game an artistic look and unique presentation never seen before. I've been lucky enough to start out gaming on the NES. Since this rebirth of the industry, I have witnessed the evolution of gaming, both in its incredible growth in overall popularity and as an entertainment medium juggernaut. With the next generation of gaming upon us, there simply hasn't been a better time to be a gamer and I can't wait to experience all that it has to offer.
