Sega Flashback: Altered Beast

Sega Flashback Altered Beast

During the time Sonic and Mario fought for your living room space, another iconic classic graced the Genesis. It was born in the arcades when brawlers were rampant and eating up countless quarters and tokens. This 16-bit animal was called Altered Beast and was even featured as a pack-in game for the Sega Genesis when they first emerged on to the gaming scene.

Altered Beast put players in Ancient Greece as a centurion who is resurrected by Zeus to save his daughter named Athena. Gamers must face a mob of ghoulish creatures. Luckily, you can turn into a monster yourself, such as a powerful werewolf with the use of power-ups found throughout each level. With each power-up your character grows stronger until the beast takes over your human form. Depending on what stage you are on will determine what special abilities you will have available. This includes the use of elements such as fire and lightning.

There are five levels that make up Altered Beast. Players are challenged within a graveyard, the Underworld, a cavern of souls, Neff’s Palace and the City of Dis. Each level has the centurion punching and kicking their way to the end of the stage. The gameplay is a bit stiff in terms of responsiveness but at the time Altered Beast was more eye candy than anything. The graphics were quite impressive during this era and it was a big bragging right for Sega Genesis adopters.  It’s a short beat ‘em up arcade port but a good one at that.

Avid gamer who enjoys the older nostalgic titles as much as the newest AAA releases. Remakes from the classic 8 and 16 bit era are some my absolute favorite titles. I also enjoy experiencing new IP's on each and every platform, especially when the creators give the game an artistic look and unique presentation never seen before. I've been lucky enough to start out gaming on the NES. Since this rebirth of the industry, I have witnessed the evolution of gaming, both in its incredible growth in overall popularity and as an entertainment medium juggernaut. With the next generation of gaming upon us, there simply hasn't been a better time to be a gamer and I can't wait to experience all that it has to offer.
